Installing new engine (black ´86 "S") in an XJ700N (-85) frame. From the back of the old engine, next to the engine-to-batteri minus connection (Pic. 1, green arrow), there was a engine-to-frame connection mounted (engine mount: Red Arrow, pic. 1), framemount pic 3 and 4, red arrows.) ("Borrowed" pic 4 from Grahams fine collection here: http://s192.photobucket.com/user/BANNEDIT/library/XJ Electrical?sort=4&page=1
    - hope it´s ok, Graham :)?

The "new" engine doesn´t appear to have had this connection mounted (paint not removed as I would suppose it had been if one wanted to assure proper connection)

Is this connection original or, if not, do I have to make an engine-to-frame connection some other place(s)?

    Thanks, Finn

There are no wires that connect to the battery box mounting bolts.

The Negative cable mounts to the Negative terminal of the battery and gets connected directly to the engine. It's secured by the bolt that goes in the hole that you have pictured above with the green arrow.

Make sure you connect the pigtail lead for the main wiring harness ground as pictured below.

The hole that you have highlighted with the red arrow (first picture) is for securing the generator and side stand switch wiring so that it's less likely to get chafed or pinched by the swing arm.

Might re-check that. I know all xj's aren't the same but you said the old engine had the connection while the new engine didn't. There is a separate earth ground connected to the left side of the frame on the 650 attached to the engine at the red arrow. It appears the po relocated the connection to the air box bolt. Without it the battery will not re-charge and the electronics will act all funky. I might be wrong for this engine.

Thanks, Gary. Talked to the seller of the engine, who has some xperience with the 700´s and he says normally (originally) the only earth ground is from engine to battery.

Do you know where the connection originally is connected to the frame on the 650?

Yes. At the end of the screw that goes through the security chain holder and the tci, regulator/rectifier holder next to the frame (i think). Mine wasn't making good contact because of the paint so i filed the paint from the frame screw hole that connects to the air box and relocated it there (it's right above the other location). Haven't had any problems since.
