    Hey guys,

Does anyone know of any aftermarket black cans that I can use to replace to stock chrome ones without having to monkey with the carbs on an '81 Xj650?

Probably asking too much cos just farting next to the XJ650 carbs seems to upset them.

Most likely won't have to change jets unless you get a 4 into 1 setup. Some have run long open pipes without a jet change.

J&PCycles.com, TCBrothers.com, MikesXS.net, Oldbikebarn.com. If you can't find any in black, you can always sand the chrome and paint them yourself.

Yeah I was kinda asking if anyone had any experience with fitting anything specific that worked without jetting. My google-fu is strong but having a hard time specifically finding cans that a) say they fit, b) failing "a" state the dimensions connection and bracket, c) mention anything about not needing to re-jet the carbs when putting them on an 1981 XJ650 with a green tank....

Thought I might find someone here that may have done it before - cos you know - that's what people do here init?

FYI - if anyone has done this don't worry if your tank is a different color - I won't tell my carbs..

Most of the sites won't list your bike because of its age. You need to measure your pipes to get the diameter and look for slip on mufflers that will fit your pipes. They also have reducer adapters (if you can't find the right size), clamps, brackets and sealer wrap for leaks. If you still have the original mufflers, they may be welded on and will need to be cut off.
My bike had aftermarket pipes that were larger diameter, I put automotive turn downs (with fiberglass wrapped drag pipe silencers in them) on mine (homemade mufflers).
Many people here have changed to aftermarket mufflers without having to re-jet, so don't worry about it unless your going with a 4 into 1 setup.
CV carbs are a PITA, I changed mine out for round slides. Had to do some mods, cost about 500 total but was well worth it. Bike ran good on pods, was easy to sync on the first try instead of 10 to 50 times with CV's. They are also super easy to clean. Have you done any maintenance on this bike yet? Is it running good?

Ribo, not sure how much this helps but I put a pair of HD Sportster pipes on my '82 xj650 like a lot of others on here did. Similar to what O-n-B said above, the process was to cut off the original mufflers, weld on an adapter and then the new pipes were able to slip-on. Mounting holes are close, so you would have to mock something up for support. And as someone else said, sand them down and paint.

The good: easy to find and cheap used sportster pipes, no re-jetting needed, fairly simple modifications, and I don't know if it's just in my head but I swear there is a little more mid-range power
