I've been bid-sniped twice on ebay on a set of side covers. So, I've decided to go custom and make my own. But to keep the side covers simple, I've decided to move my rectifier to the front of the bike (just below the tree, between the forks and the engine). I was wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom regarding this move.

THere were two reasons for moving it. One, it was in the way of a simple design for my side covers, and two even if I was able to leave it there I may be confining it more than it was. The rectifier, of course, has heat radiant fins, so it needs a little air circulation. THe new spot already has existing mounting holes, will get plenty of circulation, and should (repeat, should) stay dry.

    Any comments are helpful.

    Thanks,

Remember heat rises. In that location if you are at idle, sitting in traffic, your going to roast the rectifier. I might suggest mounting a small computer CPU fan on it and tuck it up under the rear fender (on top of the plastic).

Good thinking, Robert. I didn't think of the heat from the engine and pipes being a problem in traffic. Damn, it looked so cool there, too.

    Question:

Will having metal side covers, possibly touching the rectifier, harm anything?

I just made some side covers and had this thought as I was placing them on the bike.

Stick the Voltage Regulator inside the Airbox and seal-up the notch or hole with some "Monkey-Sheet" <~~ (got that one by the asterisk maker) ... or, RTV, Silicone, ... whatever.

Likely to stay cooler and dryer, in there, than up-front in the oven.

Touching metal will not harm the rectifier. It will however add to the surface area heat transfer and help cool the unit more effectively.
