XJ friendly tap and die set

    Hey everyone!

    It's been a bit since I've been active on here other than the occasional browse before bed, life has been keeping me busy but it is certainly all good things!

    Graduated this past May, and had an internship I created for myself turn into a great full time job this past September. Moved into a new place August/Sept. that has a garage and big basement, so it's been great being able to have the two spaces to get work done.

    Anyways, everything for the Seca minus the engine I've moved into the basement to work on, which as of late has been finally getting the frame into paint!

    So here she sits;

    My question - I want to run taps/dies over as many things as I can when putting it back together.

    Does anyone have a tap/die set that has served them particularly well while working on their XJ?

    I know there will be some oddball stuff but if I can hit the most prevalent stuff with a set and then go from there to source the rando's, I'd be happy.

    Thanks a bunch and I'll definitely update you all as the Seca progresses!

    Just go to harbor freight and get their metric set......the threads are already there for you all you have to do is chase them, you're not really tapping holes and threading rods, so you don't need super hard stuff. That's what I use.

    BTW, if you need Seca 750 parts.........check with the East Coast Parts Hoarder----I know he has 4 750 secas now, and a 5th one in boxes-----lol

    Ah. Well, in THAT case......if you need some 550 seca parts, ask. I'm working on one right now, but do have a few extra things: pair of side covers, collector box, exhaust pipes (nice chrome but ding/dents), really nice set of airb0x-to-carb boots, front fender, two carburetor racks, head w/valves, a couple tci's,............... probably some other stuff floating around ,too.

    take a bolt the size you need and cut across it at a 45 deg with a hacksaw just to the bottom of the threads so you have a few untouched threads then a few with a cut in them. use that to clean out the paint. the bolt won't cut cross-threads in your part like a tap can.
    or leave the paint in there and call it loc-tite :)

    Mud-wasps nest in bolt holes, filling them with sand in Florida.
    I have taken a spare bolt and slice it with a cut-off wheel, from the tip up about 8 threads,
    but I guess leaving the first couple intact has it's merits too.

    I'd use a small wire brush to clean holes/threads of mud and dirt before chasing threads

    those mud-wasps are really gooie sometimes, maybe their twins sometimes.
    kind of gross really, yuck
