Does my '82 XJ650 Maxim have a rev limiter? I think I've experienced some kind of shut off at the upper end of the rpm's in first gear.

Valve float is at 12,500 RPM
If the "piston sliders" in the carbs don't slide freely, you will have a limit at some point.
If the ignition is "max-ing out" from lack of voltage, bad plugs, or any reason - there's another limit.
Then there's max fuel flow, a clogged petcock, filter, shut-off diaphragm, dirty "beenie screens" wrong float settings, these "limiters" are the most dangerous, as you will run lean at the limit.

Is your front tire tight against the back wall of your garage?

Owners Manual (same bike) specifically says to change gears at shift intervals. Just saying.

Hmmm, ok thanks. Only happens in first. Feels like electronic shut off. Takes a while to warm up too.
About 10 Mnutes. Running rich. Once it warms up, runs great. We still ride this time of year out here. :)

Warm it. Shut it off. Place a rag under the petcock. Pull the vacuum hose and see if fuel is getting past the diaphram (it shouldn't). If so, replace the diaphram. Hope this help.

The shift points in the owners' manual are a bad joke. The bike should be able to pull redline in all gears if properly tuned. Beyond, even (not recommended.)

The problem is either carb or ignition related.

He's ^ baaaaaaaaack! Cool. Owners Manual says go to second at 14mph. I've run mine in first as fast as she'll go (circa 45mph). Never got near redline. I think if i was to continue riding as such i'd do as Polock stated..."blow her up". Just saying.

This is not a delicate flower of an engine we have. The user's manual's shift points (like most recommendations of the time) are meant to encourage the user to eeek out maximum fuel economy, and to prevent lugging the engine (shifting up at too low of a road speed). Polock's refrence was to the built-in old-school rev limiter (applying loads that exceed the tensile strength of valve stems and connecting rods), which you won't bump into unless you run the engine well past redline (on a stock engine).

The XJ900 31A at least has the over-revolution circuit coupled to the tacho and back to the TCI... so at least they figured that model needs to be tamed before it flies off into oblivion.

Not that, that is actually of any usefulness to you :) oops.

The 650's have plenty torque for the novice rider. 900's are a whole nother animal. I assume you'd need a lot of loooooong open roads and no cops to even begin to know what a 900 is capable of. Inner city streets won't do. Sound about right Dave?

oh yeah. My mother-in-law's house is at the other end of our field.....maybe 250-300 yards away. I can leave my driveway and pass her house at about 100mph. Plenty of power, watch out.
