So have the head off of my 50K+ mile '82 XJ1100J right now. I would love to bore it and install new pistons and rings and a ton of other stuff, but alas I just don't have the funds to do that right now.
Question for you guys is, is there anything else that I really, really should do while the head is off, or anything that would be easier to do but isn't part$ extensive that I can only do with the head off??
I have more time than money right now...

Inspect valve stems for straightness. Inspect valve seats and valve faces. Use a gun brush of proper size to clean out the valve guides. Lap the valve faces and seats so they mate precisely. For bonus points have the head surface faced so that it is perfectly flat. Figure on a couple of big ones at a machine shop if you farm out this work. You'll need all the specs from the factory service manual regarding allowable spring heights, valve face angles, etc.

Well, then you've got things pretty well covered. Might want to inspect the cylinder bores for any rust, scratches, signs of damage, etc. De-carbon the piston crowns if they're fouled badly or have crusty build-up.

The gasket set was delivered on Friday (1/23) and is awaiting you within a "parcel locker" (probably a will-call box, since the package was too large to fit into your personal PO Box?). There should be a key with the will-call box number on it inside of your PO Box, so you can retrieve the package w/o having to go to the counter.....

I would replace the cam chain guides. Old plastic gets brittle.
