What is the protocal for lights (headlight/taillight/dashboard/blinkers/anything im missing) when:
    1. You put the key in the park position
    2. You turn the key to ignition on/ you start the bike

PO chopped a bunch of switches and accessories off (no horn, clutch switch, rear brake light switch, kickstand shutoff switch) and i dont know where to find what the stock electronic actions would be.

Hope my question makes sensE. Thanks

    Your question makes sense.

    1. Off - everything off (of course).
    2. Run - Tail, license plate, nuetral and front running lights (if you have the 3 wire conversion) should come on. The front signals should manually operate.
    3. Run + Start - The oil level sensor should light until bike starts and the head light should come on. The high beam should also function.
    4. Park - Same as #2 minus the nuetral light and turn signals.

    Hope this help.

sweet! Also what cut off switches am i missing?

    Clutch, kickstand, not in neutral.

And one more thing! When i squeeze the front brake lever with key in ignition and in off position my tacho jumps to 12k im guessing this is a volt reading of the battery? any other cool features like this?

    Thanks for the reply

Idk what switches your bike is missing. The clutch switch is the nuetral switch. The kickstand switch is near the kickstand and is tied into a safety relay. The 12k jump on the tach while squeezing the brake handle is not a feature. Fwiw we love our xj's but they don't have any of the fancy electronics that modern bikes have.

The clutch switch is not the neutral switch. There is a seperate neutral switch in the engine case, under and slightly forward of the shifter. It is has a single blue wire that shorts to ground when the bike is in neutral.

The tach jumping when the front brake lever is squeezed indicates that the front brake switch is either connected to, or shorting against one of the tach wires. It is in no way a normal condition.

Considering the mess that you describe I would reccomend that you source a complete wiring harness from E-Bay and save yourself weeks of headaches.

Alternatively you can do a search for the minimal wiring diagram and go that route.

K-moe is correct in all that he said. I was trying to make sense of what he might have. Not to confuse the switch at the clutch handle with the switch in the case.
