I have a question for you electrical genius i have an 81 xj650 maxim. Put in a new wire harness everything is connected to the best of my knowledge and from what I can see. I did not disconnect anything that wasn't the main wire harness. Anyways it turns over it runs BUT on the cluster it does not read that it is in neutral no light at all high beam or turn signal either but the oil sensor light does come on. I did check the bulbs they are all fine at help here would be fantastic thank you

Guessing you have checked the fuses and condition of the fuse box on the new harness? The original fuse holders often break causing intermittent or no connections

No high beam: Does the headlight low beam work? If the low beam works, does the high beam indicator lamp work?

No turn signal indicators: Do they illuminate and just not blink, or totally dead? If totally dead, does the horn and brake light work? Blinkers, horn, stop lamp, and neutral light are all part of the signal circuit. If none of them are working then likely a fuse or there is an open somewhere in the signal circuit.

    Check list:
    Horn works
    Oil sensor light works
Turn signals come on no blinker no orange light on cluster
Head light low and high beam work but no indicator

    This is for a 81 xj650 maxim

the fault on the cluster idiot lights is probably a poor earth wire, maybe the pin is shoved back in the connector in the headlight,
turn signals "on steady" either a low battery or again poor earths.
I would check and clean all earths whilst charging battery,
if fusebox is original, dump it and fit a new blade type box

OK, so I misunderstood that it was only the indicator lights that are not working.

Are the turn signals and indicator stock bulbs?

Did they work before you changed the harness?

How did you check the indicator bulbs? Was it a visual or did you use a meter to check continuity of each bulb?

There should be a 9 pin connector with 8 wires from the indicators that connects to the main harness. It includes the oil light, so you would want to assume it is connected. I would still check it to make sure it is fully mated and has no damaged pins or sockets.

To check the indicator bulbs do this on instrument cluster side:
    (To check engine harness side)

High Beam Indicator Bulb: Ohm between the Yellow and Black wire, should be less than 20 ohms
(With high beam on engine harness yellow should go to 12V, black ties to chassis rtn)

Neutral Indicator Bulb: Ohm between the Brown and Sky Blue, should be less than 20 ohms
(Brown should be 12V with key on, Sky Blue goes to ground when in neutral)

Turn Indicator Bulb: Ohm between the Dark Green and Chocolate, should be less than 20 ohms
(Dark Green or Chocolate goes to 12V depending on left or right, rtn is through non flashing bulb opposite side)

Oil Indicator Bulb: It works but for reference ohm between the Red/White and Black/Red, should be less than 20 ohms
(Red/White should be 12V with key on and run switch set to run, Black/Red goes to ground through oil level switch - note routes through diode pack)

As for grounds suggested by "bensalf" there should be one engine harness eyelet terminal that connects to frame ground near the coils. On the 750 it is actually secured to the frame with the coil mounting hardware. The 650's also have an extra ground from the engine to the frame under the left side cover. This would not be part of the new harness install though and some would argue it is not even necessary.

Bulbs were just replaced this morning. I have a digital multimeter but not an expert at it so not sure how to exactly check for that stuff. I learn as I go and with help from you guys and of course the famous YouTube
