hello, just became a new owner of a 82 xj 750 maxim. its been sitting 23 years. cleaned the carbs, sealed the tank, put a new battery in it, and it fired up. all kinds of rats nesting came out of the exhaust, but It ran pretty good. the idle hangs up when it warms up. would like some input on what steps to take to get her up and running after sitting 23 years.

    Welcome aboard.

Did you completely disassemble the carb rack?
    Replace rubber components?

Check the valve clearances, check the rear brakes for delamination, replace any rubber brake hoses with stainless steel.
Rebuild master cylinder, and probably the Petcock.

I'm sure others will chime in.

Yup, valve shim clearances.... Then carbs----

    Brakes
    Tires
    Bearings
    Hoses
    Cables
    Fuse box
    Etc......
You have 23 yrs of neglect to correct. BUT---- if you take your time, listen to us, and work thoroughly and carefully, you'll end up with the last bike you'll ever need.

well, first thing is to check valves. then I'm thinking of taking the exhaust off and cleaning it out. what's with the big heat plate under the engine where all the pipes come into? I would like to eliminate that. don't like all that heat that close to the engine. anybody know of a way to do this?

That's the collector. DO NOT remove it. It's designed to equalize the pressure of the cylinders. If you mess with that or the air box you will have to re-jet the carbs and that can cause you a whole world of frustration.

thanks for the advice. I just took the exhaust off and the mufflers. both mufflers have loose objects rattling around. I shook them around and got all the loose pieces of screen out, but there's something bigger still in there. I don't know if it will affect it or do I need to look for different mufflers?

. . . . . , but there's something bigger still in there. I don't know if it will affect it or do I need to look for different mufflers?

Put your nose at the end of the exhaust - inhale. . . . does it smell like a burnt mouse?

I live about 5 minutes from Miller Park (County Stadium for us older folk).
Wish I was in Florida, ready for winter to be done and to get back on two wheels!
