Hello guys, My name is Cristi, I'm new around here. I bought an '82 XJ550 that I want to turn it into a cafe racer. I started with the carbs because the engine was running bad, break the carbs down to clean them (by the way thanks for the great tutorials and how tos) and found a lot of bad thinks, seems like the one that had the bike before me wanted to laugh about the next one, which is me. All the screws were broken, the Philips head was in very bad state, no bite for the screw driver, I had to make la slot head with a little metal saw and then to unscrew them. I took out all the jets, but two pilot jet didn't came out, the jet's slot head is broken, it has no bite. So this is my big problem I want to replace them but first I have to get them out, if anyone can help me with some advice please do, I thought at an option but is very tricky, to try to make a left thread in the jet's hole and pull it put with a left thread screw, but is very difficult because it's very small. Thanks a lot.

    ps: excuse my english :)

Soak them in penetrating oil (heated olive oil is good, too) for a few minutes, then try using a screw extractor tool ("easy-out" or "EZ-Out" type of tool). It never hurts to heat up (with a small flame torch) the aluminum shell around the pilot jets; the aluminum will expand quicker than the brass jet will, making the breaking-free (and extraction) of the jet easier.

hi again. tried your advice, found the tool, I forgot to say in the previous post that also a pilot screw was stucked, so I gently drilled a hole in the pilot screw, it came right out no problem, for the pilot jets it was harder because I didn't found a smaller tool, for one of the jet it worked it came out, but one didn't want to come out, I thinks when I drilled the hole to enlarge the existing one I drilled to much or I tighten the jet too much and instead of the jet to come up, the tools was going deeper in the jet, I put a lot of penetrating oil, I heated the tube but nothing, I forced it until the tool snapped (It wasn't a very expensive and quality tool). The thing is now that I can't pull the jet out and most probably I have to find another carb body. So if somebody has a Mikuni carb body to let go please contact me, meanwhile I will try to get it out. Have a nice day

We should have a good used body available, let me know which body (numbered 1, 2, 3, or 4 going from left to right).

Hi guys, the damaged carburetor is number 4, please leave me a message with how much do you want for it. Do you want me to sent you some pictures or something to identify the exact model of the carburetors, or they are all the same? Thanks you

The XJ600 Seca II carbs (at least, the North American models, which were from 1992-98) are of a completely different design, and will not interchange at all. Eoropean XJ600 models may have used a different style of carb than the N.A. versions, and those I cannot comment on.

    • these are the carbs, they come from a 1990 xj600. I studied the pictures and the carbs and they look the same, I don't know if in the inside they are the same.

If you can remove the broken bit of tool from the pilot screw, you may still have options.
Mebbe, get an impact driver (kinda like a screwdriver that turns as you hit it) and sharpen a phillips bit for it.
Set the impact driver to "unscrew" and hammer into it.
Hopefully, your sharpened phillips bit will cut into and start turning the soft brass.

Since it sounds like you will have to replace the jets anyway, have you tried a small set of vice grips on the head of the jet?

I managed to find a set of carb from somebody who dismembered his xj550, It's very dirty. I will clean this set and put in on the bike. I will use the old set for spare parts. I guess I will clean it very good and I will live the pilot jets alone.
