So I'm very green at engine stuff. The socket I use to remove my spark plugs is 18mm, but that's not my spark plug size, right? That's just the diameter of the "nut" part of the spark plug, correct? So in an xj550, what is the spark plug size? I want to purchase a colortune as I think that will make it easiest to tune up the cycle every season.

If you are going to buy a ColorTune ... You are going to NEED ... 2 Spark Plug Sockets.

Real Plug Sockets with the Cushioned inserts.

The Colortune Plug is the smaller Hex than a Standard Plug.

The Regular Plugs will be HOT from running the engine and the Spark Plug Socket with an insert will bring the Plug out without you having to singe your fingertips on a Hot Plug.

    yep, rick knows his stuff.

I haven't purchased the foam insert plug sockets yet, so I use a regular deep socket to loosen them, then use a needlenose to lift them out. I also wear Mechanix gloves.

According to the directions that I read online, you have to run the engine with regular plugs until the engine warms up, then swap in the colortune plug.

The engine is going to be hot when you swap the plugs regardless of how much time you allow to pass between tuning each cylinder. Unless the engine warm-up is merely a suggestion, not a requirement.

The engine has to be at normal operating temperature. You cannot be using the choke, and you have to have a solid idle at 1050 (+-50) RPM.

Buy your spark plugs from Advance Auto Parts, not the dealership. It'll save you a whole lotta dough.
