I took out the shim in intake 2 to put in a 2.85mm and the shim slipped out of place and when I turned the crank it flew out.. Now I can't do a full crank because the lobe won't pass where the shim used to sit.... What have I done

Oh no! Your gonna have to buy two more Xj's now!

Reality is your just going to have to figure out a way to get leverage to get the bucket down far enough to get a spacer under the cam so you can push it down. Get a zip tie in the valve, repeat til you can push it down far enough to reinsert the shim.

THERE'S HOPE. I actually had a thought about something like that! Sadly I think I need a bit more detail before I get into this... So you're suggesting I do the zip tie method basically?

Yes, but because that shim is out a you can only turn the lobe so far, you'll have to kind of do it in little steps to open it back up

hmm I think I understand... So i should use a thicker insulated wire?

Nope. you will need to use something thin at first, and increase the thickness of the wire/ziptie as you finesse the valve to open further.

This is one situation where having a bucket holding tool would be helpful. The cam style for the XJ600 might just be the perfect thing to open the valve back up with.

as K-moe said, something thin. cut a strip of 2 liter pop bottle and work that under the cam. What you don't want to do is push the bucket down with the cam unless there's something smooth between them, that might scratch the cam.

I like polock's idea of using pop bottle plastic as a friction point. but you may have to remove the cam to replace the missing shim.

Once the valve is open, and held open by a zip-ty, the shim can be replaced in the normal manner.

Well I actually have the bucket holding tool! It just won't hold it down low enough I think to get the shim back in? So you're saying I should use the bucket holding tool and a wire and then slowly increase the size of the wire?

Or zip tie... We are all saying the same thing--- you have to work your way open in steps to get the bucket to go far enough down so you can re install the shim

And if you can do that without using the cam, all the better. One sccratch on that cam and you'll have to replace it or have it reworked.

Man, I love you guys. It went super smoothly! New problem though, the problem that got me here in first place

The shim is a 29mm diameter 2.85mm shim but it's not OEM and it does not have the number on the bottom as all my other ones do....it's seriously hard to get in there like it just won't sit as the other one... Where do I go from here?

it's probably a 29.5mm shim, common to Suzuki's. I have one of those in my shim pile too.

If it doesn't fit, don't use it. Get the right one.

One of my shims didn't have a number on it either. But it was the right size. And it was still usable. Was that shim in the running bike before?
And make sure to put some clean m/c oil on the shims before they go back in.

    Incompetent dealers, man.
Going back tomorrow or some time this week with my existing Y280 shim to get the proper one.

Or in the future you could get them from Chacal or Hogfiddles and be sure you get the correct shim.

I'd love to order from Chacal right now, but between shipping and the exchange rates it's just waaaay too expensive sadly.

Hogfiddles runs a shim exchange. Talk to him.
