I have recently purchased my second XJ550. When i Bought it the guy only gave me one key with it. I noticed the carb boots were all cracked up so i parked it and ordered my parts. They arrived yesterday and when i went to put them on i could'nt find my key anywhere. Does anybody know if there is a key number on this model. Or have any idea how to cut another key? I really don't want to get a new ignition and gas cap for it if i don't have to. It is a 1981. Any help would be really appretiated.

Any GOOD locksmith should be able to make a key for you, even without a key. I'd call around.....

ubolt the ignition switch and take it to a yamaha dealer, they can cut a new key from the numbers on the bottom of the switch.

i just had this problem over the 4th, lost my only key to my only ride, got the number off the bottom of the ignition and took it to a locksmith, five min later and 14.70 US$ i had a new key. they did not ask for proof to see if the bike was mine kind of scary too if you think about it. dont bother taking off the tumbler should be a letter followed by 5 numbers on the bottom thats all they need. Good Luck

Thanks guys. I took the ignition switch out (not as easy as it sounds), and found the key number on the bottom. My Yamaha dealer had the blanks but could'nt cut the keys so they have to order directly from Yamaha Canada. If for some reason sombody else has this problem and the sticker with you key number isn't on the bottom of you ignition switch a locksmith can make a key from scratch but it cost like $85.00 cdn.
