So any advice on how to pick up the XJ650 on a lift when the pipes run underneath. Sure I can MacGiver something but I'd like to know how the pro's here do it.

That all depends on what you need to do. If it's just removing the front tire I use sandbags strapped to the rear of the seat to lift the front off of the ground, and a tie-down that is secured to the rear of the bike and to an eyelet that is anchored into my garage floor.

I need to drop the forks out and remove both wheels. I don't have eyelets in my garage floor - I do however have the use of a motorcycle lift so how do I use that to lift the bike.

If I remember correctly, CB750's are similar with exhaust hitting the lift first. I used some 2x4s under the frame for a temporary solution. If i was to do it again I would probably use 2x4s again but figure out a way to fix them a set distance apart (maybe another 2x4)

Not a pro, and not the most elegant solution, so MacGyver away

Also, might be a good idea to lower or safety jack your lift when you get done for the day. Not the most pleasant open your garage and find a bike laying on its side from the jack losing pressure over a few days, I learned the hard way...

Thanks man, I was thinking of that but just concerned for the bike falling sideways off the lift. Was thinking to ratchet strap in down to the lift also but don't want it to tilt over and slide back the other way if that makes sense.

The way I did mine was to ratchet strap across the frame where the seat goes(seat removed), each end attached to the lifting platform of the lift itself. I think there were hooks build in for that. One of my thoughts s to cut a groove in the 2x for the frame to sit in.

Hopefully someone else has a genius idea!

I use a 18" x 18" 5/8's plywood between the lift and collectors to stabilize the bike and protect the collectors from getting pinched or dented.

if you have a car jack stand, Place the bike on the center stand, have someone lean on the back to lift up the front and place the jack stand below the cross frame in the front center of the bike. The stand should be able to squeeze between the oil filter case and the #2 exhaust header without issue.

Anytime I need to leave a bike off its shoes for more than a wrenching session, I throw a ratchet strap or two over my beam in the garage. With kids running around etc., would hate to see a bike go down unattended or kids get hurt. Here are the Rebels waiting on new shoes. These are not sitting on a lift but same concept.

I wish I had a beam in the garage. Next time we buy a house the wife's going to be talking about bathrooms and ceiling height and I'm going to be grumbling about beams and eyelets in the garage like a crazy person.
