Hi I have a 83xj750 that I have redone with new top end carbs have been redone and syncronized, and new piston rings and all what not. It starts right up when cold and runs like a champ but when it gets hot wants to stay at high rpms when pull in the clutch. Need help figuring this out so I can call this thing done

Have you got the throttle cable hung up at the carbs if that little ferrule on the cable is bent it won't sit down in the holder or is there no free play in cable?
The only other way is a massive air leak Same goes for choke cable its a clamp mount type and if outer casing has been stretched the little forks that lift the choke plunger will not drop all the way back

    I'm going with:

    1. an air leak at the manifold boots
    Or
    2. You're mixture screws are not right and you're running really lean

But we need more info to start narrowing it down

I have no air leak between the head and carbs bought new boots. I had the carbs syncronized I have noticed that it does not do it as much when I put sea foam in my gas. I'm goin to check the diaphragm slides and needles see if that's it

You may also want to check what position the butterfly's are in with the idle adjuster screwed out all the way. It is possible to get the idle screw adjustment too far from midway during a bench synch.

If you are 100% sure beyond all doubt that there is no early, then I would suggest that maybe your initial bench sync was off to begin with, and you should pull the rack back out redo your bench sync again. You may have a butterfly is too far shot and is holding others open. If your idle screw is all the way out and you're still racing, that would also point that direction.

Well I went in the carbs looked at diaphragm slides and noticed the needle was not adjusted right. So I adjusted that and put 132 jets in main jet it ran good today and idled down when hot so I'm hoping I got it. The only other thing is I have a little smoke coming out I've noticed but I redid top end and piston rings so I'm hoping its just fuel

    Now the question is:
Did the needle adjustment or the 132 jet size fix the problem?

Another idea would be to check and see if you have too much tension on your choke cable. I 'accidentally' set my cable back too far when re-installing the carbs one time, and when she warmed up, just the slightest opening of the choke caused it to rev far-above idle rpms. Was a little.....embarassing when I finally saw it. lol
