Does anyone have any nifty techniques for cleaning the oil level window?
Clamp a bit of rag to a coat hanger?
    Thanks,

Odds are you will have to replace it because the plastic is probablly stained. Drain your oil out and take off the entire crank case cover. The site glass should just pop out. Just don't forget to replace it before filling your bike up with oil (lol). What bike is this anyway?

It's an '85 Maxim 700 w/ 13,000 miles. Spent a lot of its earlier years outdoors but the guy I bought it from had done most of the repair, restoration work. Unfortunately the petcock decided to go either just before or just when I bought it so I've been getting a lot of good info out of the archives. The crankcase was so full of gas and oil that I don't know if I could tell the oil level or not. But now I know what kinds are good to put in! This forum is a real inspiring source.
    Thanks

LONG cotton swab should go in and clean it up. The ones the Doctor uses to swab your throat out when you were a kid. Check walgreens or another suitable drug store.

Some have a small metal plate in front of them Making access to the inner face of the plastic for cleaning purposes almost impossible. Besides even when clear the window is almost useless for deducing yr oil level.
There IS a low oil warning light/sensor.. ever wonder why?

just use a qtip and some non abrasive hand cleaner. Its what I did, but I might have used either carb cleaner or contact cleaner. Heck you might want to try a clean qtip first.

I use a long cotton swab, several of them in fact. Work just fine. Just be sure to flush any stray strands that may/will get left behind.
