I have a couple parts for sale for an xj400 Maxim. Yup, XJ400 MAXIM.

    1. ignition switch cover/surround housing

    2. pair of airbox-to-carb boots. In real good condition.

    3. Black fork caps pair. Still nice and soft.

    PM me if you're interested.

How big is the difference between a Xj400 "regular" and the Maxim?

Well, it depends on what you mean by 'regular'.

Yamaha did some funky things with the 400's. The xj400 was a Japanese-market-only bike, and it had an inline 4 cyl and looked like a really small version of our xj's. The rest of us got the xs400. There were three different styles for that:

    xs400 Special
    xs400 Maxim
    xs400 Seca

all of which had a 2 cyl engine. Each one was the small one in each respective line.

the xJ400 was the only one that had the 4 cyl engine.

They did redo the XJ400 somewhat for the swedish and german markets because of our laws and special rules for our bikes. Or so the story goes.
I'm wondering because there isn't a single haynes or otherwise in the world that has an accurate description of what makes my bike "special".
This makes looking for parts that fit well really hard.
Changing gears isn't working the way it should for example.. Looking for an original XJ400 gear lever that i know will fit is frustrating since there are a billion of them for the XJ550/600 but very very few for the XJ4. If i find parts for a Maxim that will fit, then that makes my job a lot easier.

    Dave,
Don't forget there was the XS400 Special that was the SOHC, 2 cylinder that was similar and related (I think) to the XS650 family and then the Seca and Maxim XS400 family that was DOHC and completely different from the SOHC models. I just picked up the remains of another Maxim that has intact exhaust, wheels and engine cases if you need them. John
