85 xj700n---I appear to be getting some light oil seepage that appears to be coming out of the generator housing. It's very light and not causing a problem, but how difficult is it to fix and what are the issues in repairing it?

You have to pull the cover, the alternator rotor, and then remove the bearing retainer, and replace the oil seal and the o-ring, then put it back together. The hard part is removing the Alternator rotor. They are held on by a taper fit and can be stubborn. You will need the removal tool or a bolt with the correct thread and pitch.

My service manual calls for a rotor holder tool, a rotor puller that looks like a standard bolt, and a rotor puller attachment, but doesn't show very well how the last two work together. If I can substitute a bolt for the puller what can be used to replace or simulate the holder tool and the puller attachment? The manual seems to indicate that the rotor just pulls straight out.

My tool really is just an "x" with different sized bolts on each leg.
This allows you to get a grip strong enough to apply enough torque, but I have to turn the engine onto the bolt.

Basically, the bolt pushes the rotor off its housing. This is not easy, it takes a lot of strength and careful consideration of where your knuckles are.

I dont have a rotor holder, but the massive X tool means that im holding onto everything when it finally comes off.

Obviously, applying torque to the rotor will just spin the engine unless you apply equal and opposite torque to the timing.. Thing.. Errrrr metal plate that spins and triggers the spark..
    Yknow?

I have a similar problem. Ive assumed that it comes from the oil sprayer behind the rotor, but even after a new chacal O ring, i still have a leak.

So.. How do you remove the bearing retainer?

Put it in gear and have a friend step on the brake.

I did make a rotor holder out of a bit of scrap steel. It wedges between a rotor lobe and a bolt boss on the case.

The bearing retainer is held by three bolts, and has its own o-ring. Undo the bolts, twist and pull, and the retainer will come out.

^ exactly. Friend not available or wife says no?...wedge a length of 2x4 between the brake pedal and foot peg then under the engine guard.
