Throttle cable too tight or pinched, the cable could be routed wrong.

At one point, I needed the convience of adjusting the idle with the throttle cable adjustment. If there is any real load on that cable when idling, any movement can bump up the rpms.

I was just looking for a place to post the same problem with my '81 maxim 650. I got the motor running and wanted to go for a test ride. I started backing out of my garage when I turned the handles to the right the RPM's jumped so high I turned the engine off and wheeled it back inside. I restarted and it ran normally. Then I backed it out again and it did the same thing. I've found that when I turn the handles left the RPM's drop, and when I turn it right the RPM's jump. It just sort of idle's when the handels are straight. Naturally I started looking at the accelerator cable first, but I can't see where there is a problem. The cable sleeve seems to have enough slack and doesn't appear to be pinched anywhere. I can't see where turning the handles is causing the cable to be pulled or relaxed. It's rather perplexing.

You should maintain a little play in the throttle...it's too tight. You should have about 1/8 inch of slop/wiggle in the grip before it is able to pull on the throttle cable. Make sure the adjustment/limit screw at the carb linkage is set for minimum travel and the throttle cable is not supporting this adjustment.

There was no adjustment for the cable slack at the linkage that I could see, but on my list of other things to do was make an adjustment to the idle. When I adjusted the idle higher with the finger adjustable screw at the bottom center of the carb rack the problem went away. Turning the handles one way or the other no longer has any effect on the idle speed now.
