Picked up an 82 XJ650. I've rode a little in my life but this was my first serious bike. IMG_2128.JPG
    So what do I do?
    IMG_2207.JPG
Then we did some bending and laid parts on it for a mock up
    IMG_2211.JPG
Finished the seat and fender wrapped my exhaust and mounted the bars

bit more progress ordered some more parts. Funny story, was applying tank sealer and turns out welder sparks totally count as open flames. almost burnt the whole house down.

That appears to be an XJ900, not and XJ650..........although the engine does indeed appear to be an XJ650 non-yics engine.....

insert confused face here. the title says 650. are you saying someone hooked a 650 up the the body of a 900? Im completely new to this and have been having a blast learning as I go.

It might also be a XJ750RL, they used the same frame/suspension/bodywork as the XJ900 models, but with a 750cc engine.

The only way to know for sure is to provide the first 10 or so positions of the VIN for us......it's either on a decal on the steering tube (left side) or stamped into the tube on the right side. That will positively identify the frame.

On the engine, there is a flat machined pad (about 2 x 4") just above/behind the clutch cover. In it is stamped the model ID code and the serial number of the engine. That number will determine what bike the engine was originally installed into.

Or, it might be something completely else. I notice now that it is a CHAIN-DRIVE, all the XJ650-XJ1100 models are shaft-drive. Maybe is' an FJ600?

In any case, frame and engine numbers will provide a for-sure answer.

Gotta watch out for those little beads of fire. You haven't lived til one rolls down between the laces of your shoes and burns the hell out of your foot. Wear some slip on boots.

    Gotta be an FJ600:

    Could be an '84
    FJ600L 1984 Model code 49A Engine Serial #'s start at 49A-000101
    or an '85
    FJ600N 1985 Model code 49A Engine Serial #'s start at 49A-007101

If it's a 51K code, those were produced for the California market.

    Info sourced here:
    Yamaha model ID

That's an FJ600..... I had one of those--- it's a little chain-drive cousin to the xj900rk/xj750rl. Giveaways are the side covers, the tail cowl/grabbar/tail light assembly, chain drive, the mufflers, the 900rk-esque, tank and seats, front fender, and the engine that is very much like the xj550 engine but without the YICS stuff or valve cover.

Forward controls were the easiest thing ever. They are just the TC bros brand and all i had to do was cut and re thread the rod and kink it slightly on the brake side

As for the the engine serial # 49A-000223
    First 10 of the Vin # JYA49004EA

    Frame: 1984 FJ600 non-California model.
Engine: 1984 FJ600 non-California model, is the original engine if the last 7 of the frame VIN is also 000223

Obviously, a 600cc engine, so if it says 650cc on the title, well......................
