Hey Guys, I've been on the forum for a little while now and started working on my Maxim. I acquired the bike from one of my best friend's father after the friend passed away. I've pulled the carbs and cleaned, disassembled and set the floats. I am planning on doing the adjusting the valves, but I just be missing something with the threads I've read. I've adjusted a few bikes but do not understand the shims. Do I figure out what size I need and buy new ones?

Other question is I put the carbs back on and it attempted to start but wouldn't. Now what I'm trying to figure out is if I look at the bowls and where the tube goes down, is that the pickup tube for when the choke is on?

Thanks for any help in advance,
    Dave

there is a tube that runs from the petcock to the carb boot at motor it is a vacuum line. then a tube that runs to the carbs from the petcock it delivers gas
    try setting petcock to pri(me)
post a photo of the tubes.

the photos in the valve thread show the petcock and tubes
also where you see the photo of the TOOL for the valves look at the gas filter.
you see that little fork with a pin in the forks ?that is the Enrichment circuit "choke" there are 4 of them. do you have munkini carbs?

Caution: Do not rotate the crank without having all shims for each valve installed. Remove a shim, read & record, replace the shim then move on to next one. Hope this helps.

You got the bike from the father of one of your best friends? How many best friends do you have? I only have one best friend. All the others are just friends and good friends. Only one is best. Hmmmm, reminds me of the Chunky candy bar commercials.-----It's Thickerer. Was it your best friend or your besterer friend? LOL

Yes, that tube is the enricher pickup tube (its not really a 'choke'....it's an enricher . It doesn't choke the air, it allows for extra fuel to make a richer mixture for starting the bike. The enricher tube extends down into the enrichment well in the bowl. At the bottom of the bowl is a tiny pressed-in jet that must be clean. If it is clogged, there will be no fuel getting into the well from the bottom of the bowl. Then, there's not going to be any fuel for the enrichment circuit to draw from.

Now, is your bike an air-cooled xj700, or is it a liquid-cooled xj700X? It makes a difference, because the valves are different, the shims are different, the way you do it is different, and the clearances are different.

So before we both drop coin on a manual, can somebody tell me what all these letters mean after the XJ700? Like N, NC, XNC, S, SC, XN?

Well he was a good friend, not the best...lol. Ok, you exactly answered my question about the enricher. I cannot figure out the best way to clean that, hell, I can barely see anything in there but I do know it is definitely dirty. The tubes are clean, just not the bowls where the jet is. Bike sat for 12 years. Finally got the tank all cleaned out from the rust on the inside.

Air cooled. I understand how to check the shims, but do I buy the correct shims after I figure out what I need?

If your carbs are like the 650 Mikuni carbs, that enricher tube goes into a drilled passage in the float bowl. That passage has a pressed in jet that is probably plugged. It will take a fine piece if wire to clear it.
