    I purchased my 1982 XJ1100 a couple of months ago. There's a few things about it that I haven't worked out quite yet. I think YICS means Yamaha Induction Control System, so I'm assuming it has something to do with air intake. Sorry if this question has been discussed to death already, but I couldn't find an answer by searching. Anyone know of a link that would explain it, maybe?

    It has been discussed and you can search the forums to find lots og detailed info, but the short version is that is was a method of internal air passages within the head that attempted to equalize fuel-air intake between the 4 cylinders... sort of balance them for smoother operation.

    Y = Yamaha
    I = Induction
    C = Control
    S = System

    Basically a vacume balance port between the carbs on the engine side before the cylinders.....

    Or as everyone else is so quick to point out.... run a search!

    i asked the guys i rode with back when i bought the bike "what exactly does YICS stand for?"

    the answer was
    funny, one ran an 82 SECA turbo and the other a 600 FZR...

    i got this license plate for it since it had a YIKES Motor on it...
