The previous owner of my bike used 10W30 semi synthetic oil in my Maxim. What's the best oil to use? Is synthetic or semi synthetic better or worse?

    Re: Oil type

As far as what is best or worse, I don't know. I have used full synthetic in all of my bikes, cars, trucks and my tractor for the past 10 years or so. So far, I've had no trouble. For the bikes that I bought new, I broke them in according to the manual and recommended oil. I then ran the recommended oil to the second oil change and then switched to full synthetic. Bikes that I bought used, I immediately put in full synthetic.

Oh, I've always used Mobile I AUTOMOTIVE oil in the bikes and my other vehicles.

Good to hear someone is using Mobil 1 synthetic. I read many great reviews on Mobil 1 oil so this definitely is great news :D

Interesting because the previous owner used CT semi-synthetic 10W30 car oil.

What's in the motorcycle oil that's not in regular oil?

RJClark, uses automotive Mobil 1 oil and it seems to work for him.

I use dino oil 10-40. Change it every 3000 km and oil and filter every 6000km. I use synthetic in the ski doo though.

    Re: Oil type

One of the bike magazines did an oil comparison a few years ago. I don't remember which magazine, but it was either Cycle World, Motorcyclist or Sport Rider. (The ones I subscribe to.) As I recall the major brands contained the same components. However the percentages of each component varied slightly from brand to brand. I think that as long as you use a high quality oil and change it when needed, it doesn't really matter which brand you choose. As I stated earlier, Mobile I has worked for me, but I hear good things about other brands as well, e.g. AMSOIL

I can honestly say, fossil Oil is Fossil oil. Any name brand oil really has no difference. The diffence is .0001 or less in the formula from namebrand to namebrand. Synthetic on the other hand is manmade. The upside is its ability to stay stable. Downside is it has a tendency to eat at your seals.
    My two cents.
