...and when you do ask questions, add your specific bike model information to you signature line in your profile setup like we did. It'll save others from having to ask before giving you mistaken advice. Case in point: Stump's '81 is a whole different beast from my '82, even though they're both 650 Maxims made for the US.

    Welcome and enjoy!

And I have been known to give erroneous information based on my limited knowledge of my XJ650 - thinking it was transferable to other XJ models . . .

Thanks! I am in the Okanagan. Too new for a ride to van yet, not to mention i'm not too sure my bike would make it. I got it blind (having never owned or riden a motorbike before) he said it was 14000 original k's but I am learning more slowly and I think he might have lied about it...

Caution is a good thing. You have a 30 year old bike. You must ass-u-me that everything the previous owner did (if anything) was wrong. Go over every system to be sure. Tires, brake lines, shoes and pads, trust nothing! There should be a manufacture date printed on the brake lines. They are supposed to last 4 years. More than likely, yours are the originals! The rear brake shoes have a reputation for delaminating, leaving you in danger when they do.
