I took the clutch assembly apart and found that the clutch plates had been installed randomly before I purchased the bike.

    How I know this?

Not every plate was facing the same direction (curved edge versus sharp, stamped edge) and the tab on each plate was not installed 72 degrees in respect to each opposing sides as per the manual.

Now, the question is how do I verify that the plate is installed 72 degrees in relative to the tab on the previous clutch plate? I drive myself crazy trying to determine 72 degree (counting teeth, measuring the actual angle, etc.).

    Any suggestion?

OH, by the way, when I took everything apart (yes, I kept everything in order even if they were wrong anyway), I found only ONE clutch spring plate as opposed to TWO according to the exploded diagram given in the manual. The one that was in the case created three nice dents in the teeth where 3 tabs reside. Is this normal and are there supposed to be 2 springs instead of only one after all?

    Hope someone can help.

They say "72-Degrees" ... because that will give you an "Even" stagger when all the Clutches are put back in.

You don't NEED precisely 72-Degrees ... They want you to Stagger the arrangement so that the Friction will be evenly distributed over the outside of the Drivers.

Look at this Compass ... 72 Degrees is a Stagger ... because if you went only 45 ... or 90 ... they'd be "Lined-up" again!

Yes... I know what a compass looks like... I'm a pilot, I should know...

Ok, I guess it's not of an importance for the interval to be precisely 72 degrees. I assumed it had something to do with the balance of the whole assembly.

What about clutch spring plate? Isn't there supposed to be two of them instead of just one?

Forget it, I'll just stop by a local Yamaha and get an extra, just to be safe.

An interesting tibbit of information here if anybody cares...

The exploded diagram for the clutch assembly in the Cylmer manual shows TWO clutch spring plates whereas the diagram on My Yamaha web site shows only ONE.

Just saying that sometimes it's better to double check.

I wonder just how inaccurate Clymer manual could be? Of course I know no manual is perfect.
