Was wondering if the output shaft and bearings could be removed without splitting the case open ?? I have the swingarm off and final drive, etc. Also the shifter side plate. Looking for a bearing noise but so far the only thing I found is the shaft will turn inside the small end bearing race. Any thoughts or help appreciated. 515 miles from home :-(

    Thanks, Don

Sorry Demon, I'm not sure which bearing that is and I'm at school right now without my book. Are you ok for the moment or are you stuck?

The housing behind the U-joint comes without splitting. You'll be able to service that one bearing without a tear-down ... but, I don't see how you be able to do any bearings beyond there without taking down the lower end.

Do you have a whine or a thumping noise?

Thanks very much for the response!

The bearings I need to get to are the ones one the output shaft. small one towards front of engine and one larger just ahead of the U=joint in the round housing with spacer. 4 bolts hold this housing in the main case. The smaller bearing is at the shaft end away from the gear and u-joint. Looks to me there is too much slack in the bevel gears for some reason also. No pieces or metal evident and the noise is isolated to just the driveline. will make the noise when rolling in neutral, engine off. puzzling !

That inner bearing has a grove machined in the the outer race for a retaining clip to hold it to the casing! It won't come out without splitting the casings.

Thanks Nick, yes I'd seen that in a picture once and was pretty sure that was the case with that bearing. Not happy with that setup ! Oh, well, another project for this fall. I will trailer it home before I attempt the case split. Way too nice a bike to let it go or part it out.

Thanks again for the responses, Don
