    Hi Guys,
I recently acquired a complete 1981 xj550 Seca in white for $350. Only 14,000 miles on the engine. I have cleaned the carbs and rebuilt with new jets and carb gaskets. I placed them back into the bike and it started right up. However, after a few seconds, the engine would die. I would try to restart the engine but it would not restart. I waited about 10 minutes and it fired up but then quickly died. I have played with the fuel/air mixture screw. I have it at 2.5 turns from seated position. I'm not too familiar with these yamahas so any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks

    ARnold

Check your valve clearances. I think you will find at least some of the exhaust valves to be tight.

I wouldn't worry about the valve shims at this point---

I'd suspect your floats are not at correct heights, and/or you have some throttle-shaft seal leaks, AND if your bench sync is off you'll have trouble, too

put the fuel valve to prime and see what it does
