I am trying to fix an oil leak and I know this cover does not have oil behind it but I am trying to find out why their is a gasket and rubber donut s and why this needs to be sealed. And the white plastic peice I don't know if that goes on the bike or just rolled from some where else in the garage. Also i have the left side cover off of the crankcase.the one over the shifter. When I took the cover off I did not see exactly how it goes on. It looks selfexplanitory but don't want to mess it up. I also played around with the inside shifter thing. Does it matter what gear it's in when I put it back on. I also could only get the shifter thing to go up and down once I could not thru all 4 gears. Is thathat normal. I looked for part of primary guide chain and could not see anything.would it be plain as day to see or do I have to search

    1. I have no idea what pieces you are trying to figure out as there is no accompanying photo.

    2. The shift cover pretty much can only fit on one way, so do that. Don't overtighten the machine screws. 7.2 ft-lb is all they need.

    3. It does not matter what gear it is in.

    4. The trnasmission won't go through all of the gears unless all of the gears are lined up, and that requires the rear wheel to be moving.

    5. There is a fairly large passage between the shift selector and the transmission that is located to the rear of the shift drum. Shine a flashlight through that passage. If there are any peices large enough to cause trouble you will see them.

Where did that white thing with the o-ring come from? I'm not an expert on the later bikes, but it does not look familliar.
The gasket on the outer case covers are there to keep water and dirt from getting inside. On the left the gasket protects the ignition pickups, and on the right it protects the case from corrosion. If you have oil coming from behind either of those covers it would be because of a failing crankshaft seal.

No such "white thing" on my 85 xj700n. It looks like something that might be on an automotive vacuum line.

Ya. It does sort of look like a vacuum check valve.

That does look the same. It may be a flame arrestor, or a one-way valve to keep emissions from a filled cylinder from escaping to atmosphere. I really have no other guesses than that. Still not sure that it was put on there by Yamaha.
