So. ...i have no clue where to post this. I feel like if i do other i won't get answer.

Apologize if this is the wrong spot but i was just given a 77 ebbtide captiva. Now I've wanted a small boat for fishing for a while but this can be the whole 3 of us now.

So. ...i don't know anything about boats truthfully. I can do engines and wiring but no clue how to test the engine with a hose and what shoots out water and just the whole deal. Any good youtubes or websites would be greatly appreciated.

This all started from taking to my deaf friend about our hobbies.

He says....well signs.... "you still fish a lot right" yea" "ive got something you can have"

Walk around the barn expecting a pole or something. Trailer and all with title in his dads name. Its yours lmao.

A boat is just like a car but no wheels. I suggest to get a service manual for whatever motor is on the boat. It will go through all the questions you have.

Don't forget that the trailer needs to be safe too!

Check the hull below the waterline for signs of repairs. The hull of those are built on a wooden frame, and if the wood rots the hull will crack. It is not a common problem, but one to be aware of. If you see a spot along the keel that looks to have been repaired multiple times then walk away from the boat. Otherwise they are a really good runabout/fishing boat.

You can use what they call 'earmuffs' , hook a hose up to it then clamp on the lower unit where the water intake is so you can start the motor out of the water. That way you don't over heat the engine or burn out your impeller (water pump). something like this. Lots of guys winterize their motor using this method as well.

You know a boat is a big hole in the ocean you dump money into, right! When the bike business went for a crap in the mid 80's I worked in a boat builder shop 28-32 foot glass pleasure yachts , it was a tax haven lease pool deal and was great fun for about 2 years. But omg did they spend money loading these things up with gear. Best part about a bike vs boat... You screw up the boat just open sea cock and it's gone ! bike on the other hand if you crack it up its still sitting on side of road or track staring at you with that wtf did you do to me look !

Completely off topic, but the reply...
reminded me of this joke (yes I know, my brain travels in strange circles... lol)

A vacationing penguin is driving his car through Arizona when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.

After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal."

"No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."

NEVER run the engine out of the water or without the "earmuffs" shown earlier attached and running water or you WILL destroy the water pump. The impeller in the water pump is a tough rubber but since it rotates in a stainless housing it will melt and come apart if there is not a good source of water to both lube and cool the impeller. My son let his run about 45 seconds and the impeller was nothing but g00 when the shop repaired it. Before using the boat hook it up to the "earmuff" and make sure it "pees" when you get it running. If not the the water pump is bad or the pee tube is clogged.

I am sure you made your friends day because the two bests days in a boat owners life are the day he bought it....and the day he sold/gave it away.

We used to run ours in a 25 gallon steel trashcan filled with water.
