Please specify which carb (#1, 2, 3 or 4). #2 and #3 are interchangeable; #1 and #4 are location specific.

He has Hitachi Carbs. The float posts are different and only might be able to be repaired that way. The post on his carb is rectangular and does not have enough width for a very large hole.

It's the carb opposite the petcock.

Cylinders and carbs are numbered 1-4 starting at the left side of the engine as you sit on the bike. By opposite the petcock, do you mean the #4 carb?

Unfortunately that is the one carb body I do not have a good spare of. Hopefully someone else does. If you are looking on Ebay the XJ750 uses the same carb body.

I found a used set of all 4 at a local bike graveyard he want $100 for them? Should I change them all or just get the #4. He said they need to be cleaned so I'm guessing there bad and should just use my 3 good ones and just the #4 from him. I'm spitting oil out my exhaust too, is this the ring or to much oil?

I'd get the set (spares are always a good thing ot have). Offer $80 and see if the bites. $100 may or may not be out of line depending on what conditoon the internals are in (slide diaphragms in particular).

    As for the oil...

On the right side of the engine is the clutch cover (big round thing). On top of it is the oil filler cap. Remove the cap and take a sniff.
If it smells like gas then you need to:

    1. not run the engine at all until you...
    2. clean the carbs per The Church of Clean (you have one or more stuck or leaky float needles)
    3. Test and possibly rebuild the petcock (fuel should flow freely on Prime, and only flow with vacuum applied to the small hose on the petcock in any other position).
    4. Complete a full oil change with a new filter using a JASO MA rated oil.

If you do not smell any gas in the crankcase then the oil is likely just overfilled. There is a sight glass on the bottom of the clutch cover near the brake pedal. The oil should be checked with the bike on the center stand. The oil level should be at or below the upper mark that is cast into the clutch cover next to the sight glass, but above the lower mark.

If you have not yet read The Information Overload Hour I suggest that you do. Link is in my signature.

Is that the same one that I currently have? By that I mean the same carb as the 650? If so then I'll do it and pay whatever the shipping is to have it asap.

They are the same carb, but with slightly different jetting. You will need to swap the jets from your 650 carb into the new carb body. I don't have my jetting list handy, but you will only need to change the jets that have different numbers on them from yours. IIRC the pilot fuel jet is the same, but the main fuel jet is not. I'm uncertain about the air jets.

If purchasing a COMPLETE carb, the only jets that are the same between 650 and 750 carbs are the pilot fuel jets; all others are different tween the 650 and 750 models. The main jet needle is different, too.

For bare carb bodies only, the 750 carbs will have the ultra-fine-threaded mixture screw, whereas the 1980 XJ650 carb will have the coarse-thread version. He'll have to remember that when tuning the carbs, that carb will require special attention compared to the others when making mixture adjustments.

So it seems like it will be a pain? This is my first bike so I'm not to savy with how everything works, so I'm not to sure I want to make things more complicated for myself as I will be doing 98% of all the work my self.

I would not consider it to be a pain, just another set of steps and one thing to remember when setting the carbs up (and something to make sure any new owner knows about). But you are the only one who can determine if it will be a hassle for you or not.

I had a simmilar situation. My #4 carb has the threads for the pilot screw partially stripped. I did a make-do fix that allowed me to run the bike (with that cylinder slightly rich) and shopped for a spare rack. After a few months looking I bought a spare set for a decent price and am now in the process of rebuilding and swapping that rack for my current set (which will become 3/4 of a spare set). I
