Forum members, I have for sale a 1983 XJ 900R with 27,000mi that is running, ride-able, registered in CA, and has a clean title. Having already messaged hogfiddles about getting the bike into his registry of XJ900s, I have come to understand that this crowd doesn't miss a thing. Here is what hogfiddles noticed from the pictures and what I’m sure others will see too:

"non-original tank badges, non-original windscreen, and non-original seat cover, turn signals, mirrors, shocks, missing cap on keyswitch, the gauges have had all the deep red faded to white, the left rotor seems to indicate either a sticky caliper or worn-out pads...."

Some of these things have explanations, some are just how I bought the bike. So, while I will do my best with whatever questions you may have, understand the bike is in the category of "what you see is what it is." I have no box of original parts laying around, nor am I trying to hide anything.

    A little history:
I bought the bike in 2011 from a self-proclaimed Yamaha enthusiast (who might be a member here for all I know). The bike was being stored in a garage in San Diego, CA and the seller was not the first owner. While this is the sixth bike I have owned over my 17 years of riding, I did not know much about this particular model at the time. I was suckered in by its good looks and the cheap price. Over the next three years, I spent lots of time and money keeping it running and ride-able. I’ll admit, Most of the work was done by a local repair shop (Vista Motorcycle in Vista, CA).

Here are the general areas of repair on which I focused:
-suspension front and back: the rear shocks replaced, and the forks have been gone over several times, though I’m not sure they have ever been “rebuilt.”
    -carb rebuild (2012)
    -various electrical issues corrected
    -seat re-upholstered
On the topic of repairs done by me—whoever is seriously interested in purchasing the bike can ask me to elaborate, but I would prefer to go into details over the phone rather than write long explanations which may only serve to confuse.

I gave the bike a tune-up about a month ago and discovered that the old plugs showed no sign of carbon build-up and they had an even burn. Oil came out clean, no shavings. That's the good.

    Now the bad:
    -fork seals need replacing
-front brake is weak and mushy
-paint: previous owner says he had the bike repainted with “correct” original color scheme (2009-2010?); however, he did not clear coat, so the tank is smudged where I have dribbled gas on it (no matter how hard I have tried, it happens. Sorry, to the next owner.)
-it has been dropped by me in the garage, thus the clutch handle tip is broken off, but the clutch handle is still functional. (I know this is an easy fix, but sue me, I'm busy)

    Price:
The bike is listed on local Monterey craigslist for $2700. I am reasonable and the price is negotiable. I would prefer not to part it out; it seems a shame to break down a working bike. I’m not in a hurry and I know what KBB says for price, but I’ll tell you that the bike is worth more to me as a modern, garage-art masterpiece than what KBB says of its value.

Msg me in private for a phone conversation. My name is Ryan.

These are my pics, I will send more to the seriously interested.

    1. I did notice the paint/stripes are slightly different, but was attributing that to My phone screen brightness was turned down, and all the pics are in the shade.

    2. Yeah, KBB doesn't always take rarity/availability/collectibility/etc... Into their factoring. These bikes run a good bit higher.

    3. Please send me a private message with the info that I asked previously so that I can get it onto the registry.

Hey Dave - yea ran across this some time back. The price plus 'the bad' made me pass. Would have been location doable as I have family around the Monterey Bay. Will just keep looking.

The sun, moon and stars are not aligned and I really don't want to insult you. It's a good looking bike.
