What's it all mean, Mr Natural?

Sorry for the waaay back reference but the insightful question about what would the XJ bikes be like if made today made me stop and think how many different letter designations there are behind all the different displacement models. I've seen X, XS, N and I can't recall all the others right now. H L ?
Is there a comprehensive website or other source -- maybe even the XJCD, whcih I have on order -- that would give a comparative rundown of the different designations, their relative timeline and differences one from the other?
I've seen with earlier Seca's that some had chain drive before going to shaft and if not mistaken even seen 80/81 Maxim's with chains. Then it appears that Seca II's went back to chain in the 90's.
Sure would be great to be able to sort all this out even though I know I have a lot of catching up to do. Any links would be appreciated.
Or maybe a forum member is a trove of info and has time to put this into a post that could become a sticky.
Thanks, more questions to come I'm sure.

The earlier 550 Maxim and 650 Secas are chain drive Mark. The Seca didn't get the shaft (pun intended) unless you got into the 750 displacement. The Maxim had a shaft for 650 or higher. Your interest in the historical details of the XJ linage is admirable. However I've no insight to offer. I hope someone else can provide you with the details of something of interest to you. Best of luck in your effort. You might want to make a Wikipedia entry when you get everything compiled.

Hmmm, I wonder if I can write off a trip to language school to learn Japanese in order to do all this.
Right now there's an outstanding example of an XJSeca750RJ being sold on ebay by a guy who also had FJ's. Now I have other distinctions to suss out. Thanks for the reply, I'm sure others will have more tidbits to post in the days to come.
Oh, just checked ad that Seca with 21K miles went for $2175. It is beautiful. They got a deal! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0132353220

All Seca/Maxims above 550cc were shaft drive. The Seca II is an entirely different engine.
