Hello from Alberta, found the place while searching on this Maxim I recently picked up, bike hadnt been fired in 4yrs of heated storage, PO was gonna put new rubber manifolds on but only got as far as pulling the side covers and battery. I pulled the carbs and replaced the rubbers, and got it fired up. Theres a couple warning indicators on the LCD screen I need to sort out, one is for kickstand other for brakes, Im guessing the stand is an issue with a safety switch, and theres new brake pads included in a box of parts so Im hoping that warning goes away after a brake job.
Overall the bike is in decent cond, new seat, good tires, 50+K, possibly down once but lightly, windscreen, leather bags. Might become the wifes bike, I have a '98 1100 Shadow also.

    Cheers

The brake warning will be for a low brake fluid level, or the wires are broken/disconnected. You should plan on rebuilding the calipers, master cylinder, and replacing the brake lines. Just putting new pads in is asking for serious trouble.
The sidestand warning will be down to either the switch being dirty, or not connected (broken wire, or unplugged) With that fault the bike should stall as soon as you put it into gear.

You should also check valve clearances.
Read The Information Overload Hour (link in my signature). You may also wan to seek consulation at XS11.com in addition to here as the XJ1100 has the same powertrain as the XS1100, and that site has more technical writeups for that engine than we do.

Thx, the stand warning was just a sticky switch so I cleaned that and took the bike for a short ride, front brakes are not good so thats the next step, but it ran good, no ugly noises, clutch and gears all seem to work properly, no other warning indicators came up.

I saw that xs11 site but they have closed self registration... says to use the "contact us" link but I couldnt find that using the mobile site.

Ive ridden an xseleven in the past although prob 25+ yrs ago, but this Maxim seems to be on par to what I remember, very fast bikes for their time. It needs a battery and possibly a solenoid switch, fluid changes all round and a good cleaning, Im not in any rush so I'll work on it over the winter.

Made a little progress, new battery and solenoid are in, had a leaky petcock but there was a gasket included in the parts box so I put that in yesterday, that was the internal gasket behind the selector dial and causing it to always prime the left side carbs and therefore flood. Some minor electrical repairs yet to do, mostly due to brittle plastic plugs in bad shape. Its rolls straight and rides good although Ive only put about 40k on it so far.
