The orange o-ring is a seal which installs in a groove at the base of the jugs.

What bike do you have? Might help if you would put that info in your signature line.
I have a 650 crate engine and a real nice 750 engine with about 20 k on it. If you wanted to think about but the shipping would be the problem.

I have an 1980 xj650. I found whole bike for $200 but it doesn't run so that worries me, and it will be a month to scrape that together or more.
What's your price if I can get one that I know runs it worth thinking about.

Can I ask what you paid for your bike with the broken motor and how much do you have invested in it?
I think most people pay less for a complete bike than what I need for my crate engine. Keep in mind this complete with carbs, starter, all wiring for plug and play install. The coolest thing is the engine has no serial number stamped in the serial number space.

is that the inside of cylinder ??? Broken rod is likely the culprit !
One missed shift ? Engine tacked out and bang? Or valve through piston and broke piston pin boss and KAPOW!

Some see a messed up engine. Others see the opportunity to build an XJ triple.
Get friendly with a retired machinist who likes engines.

If you only have $400 into it you should look for another bike with a good mill in it and make one good one out of the two. Sell off the spare parts and call it a day, would be my advice.

Ya I found a whole bike on Craigslist that looks to be in good condition and there is a few other parts that I need for 200$ but I'm not sure if it runs or that motor had issues, so it's kinda a crap shoot. Thanks for the advice guys.

Even buying a brand-new machine is a crapshoot. What you hae found is an inexpensive crapshoot that you can work on without having to wait for factory authorization.

Is that one of those that yamaha shipped to dealerships in the 80's as a training tool? I believe a member here worked at for Yamaha back in the day and mentioned those... Pretty cool stuff. Has it ever been installed anywhere?

No Matt its entirely intact and never installed. It's still in its factory Yamaha crate with a part number on the wood. I have my 81 650 super low miles (6000) but a couple of head fins got damaged. I was going to install it to mint my bike out and sell the low mile motor to someone that needs one.

Replacement cases wouldn't have had the serial number stamped until the service department at the dealership swapped parts into the new cases. The same is true of entire replacement engines. Very cool to find one.

    Yup, replacement engine---

I have a maxim X frame w/no number... Replacement frame:).

I had one yamaha dealer tell me it means it's hot and was stolen from the factory, I should bring it in to them right away. I have them the big round scared eyes and said I would right away!! They were so happy that I'd do that--- obviously I never did, not ever went back there again. I may be dumb, but i aint stupid or gullible.

Would be fun to find a replacement X engine w/ no number to put in a maxim x frame w/ no number!! Lol

It would be a matching no-number!

When has a cop ever stopped to look at your vin number as long as the plates match your drivers licence. Bikes that are old as ours they could not even care less. They are more interested to see how much they can nail you for.

Yes, but go read Len Chacal's write-up on swapping a 750 into a 650. It's part of the INFORMATION OVERLOAD HOUR. There are details you need to know.
