My owner's manual says there should be a tool for measuring the final and middle gear oil level. Does anyone have that tool that would be willing to share it's measurements so I can fab one?

I just picked up this 82 xj1100, and I'm trying to sort it out. I think I've revived the front calipers, now onto some other minor issues. It's my first Yamaha, and I'm very excited to get it going. It seems very well designed, and fairly easy to work on. It reminds me of my much missed BMW R1100R.

    Regards,
    Greg

Final Gear lube (with bike on center stand) should be even with the bottom of the filler hole or just below.... if you don't want to make a mess on the garage floor!!

Middle.... I'm not certain. I thought it was the same as/with the engine oil? I'll be enlightened here as well!!

The owners manual shows a tool; approx. 4" long, with a T shape about 3/4 down the shaft. One end is labeled "rear", one "middle". I would guess that there wouldn't be a tool for checking it if it was intended to be filled to level.

From the photos, it may have been plastic? so probably didn't survive most tool kits. It also may be unique to the 1100? IDK...

Did anyone ever provide the lengths for the dipstick oil gear oil level checking tool? I'm in the same predicament...used bike, no tool in the kit...no idea how much oil to fill the middle and rear gearcases with on my '82 XJ1100J...

I didn't realize the XJ1100 had this. I knew the early Ventures and V-Max did.

At least in the case of the Venture and V-max the dealer can still order the tool.

    **EDIT**

    Looked it up for you:

    2H7-2815A-00-00 GAUGE, OIL LEVEL

Found it on line for $4.83. With shipping cost cheaper to pay the Dealer the 8 bucks or so he will want for it.

Found this on another site...just what I was looking for. The ""ASCI drawing" doesn't look at all right on this forum, but I wanted the dimensions...I know what the tool looks like so the dims all that's really needed.

The Official Yamaha (TM) stick is put together as follows. The short end is for measuring REAR drive, and the long end is for measuring the MIDDLE drive. The two horizontal lines at each end indicate the low and and high range for oil.
