I think i might be leaking. Could you guys take a look and tell me which gaskets I might need to replace? Also when i try to downshift I usually have to raise the shift lever up with my foot before pushing it down.

Valve cover gasket and rubber washers under the bolts.

^ need to be replaced. Easy to do along with a valve clearance check.

The shifting problem is likely a broken or weak shift return spring (this is a known issue on the early 750 machines). That is located behind the shift cover on the left side of the bike. A new gasket and shift shaft oil seal would be worth doing while the cover is off.

If you have not read The Information Overload Hour yet, please do so and get the rest of the bike in order (I'm fairly sure that you haven't yet because the valve cover looks to have not been removed in some time, and a valve clearance check is the first order of business when getting an XJ roadworthy).

in the first picture, top center, does that donut and bolt look strange?
jubjub, before you take that cover off, clean it up , you'll be doing some maneuvering to get it out and don't want that gunk falling in the engine. Then put some penetrating oil on those exhaust flange nuts because some day you're going to want to take them off and they look rusted tighter than a nu......never mind. Put a drop on them every time you put gas in it
don't over tighten those cover bolts, they like to strip

It does. Might be an o-ring instead of the proper doughnut, which would explain why it's wet.

Thank you so much for the info. Im traveling right now and won't have access to my bike or a workshop for about two weeks. I'll replace that gasket and washers and do a valve clearance check when I get back. I'll update you with some pictures.

So I checked my clearances today. They are all within spec thankfully. The gasket looks good but the donuts look worn and I will be ordering new donuts today.
