Hey all, I have an 81 xj550 maxim and am finally getting around to checking the valve clearances. They are all pretty darn tight and I'm not quite sure how to figure out what I need to get them back in spec. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first shim I pulled was blank on both sides, how would I go about measuring it? Here's what I got.
    . 1. 2. 3. 4
    E .10(250) .13(250) .12(255) .15(255)

    I .10(???) .08(270) .10(265) .07(260)

It will be parked until I get it back in spec.

Assuming the numbers you wrote are the clearance measurements in mm, all of your valves are obviously too tight. If specs are 0.11 to 0.15 mm for intake and 0.16 to 0.20 mm for exhaust (it is the same for all XJs with only one exception the Maxim-X), you will need thinner shims:

    E: 240-245-250-250

    I: ???-265-260-255

For intake #1, you should use an accurate caliper and measure the shim thickness to make sure what you'll need. A 250 shim is 2.50 mm thick, for example. If it is 2.49 mm thick, let's consider it is a 250 with some wear.

JS, when you have your measurements finalized, start a conversation with me. I run a shim pool, so may be able to help you with your swap.

So you will need a 270 shim for intake #1.
