After swapping in a working speedo and tach, the self-cancelling turn signals are not self cancelling.

What is the diagnostic procedure to figure out what needs replaced?

    Were they self-canceling before?
Is the self-canceling unit plugged in?
Do you hear a small, slightly tinny "tink, tink, tink" coming from the speedometer when you spin the speedometer drive?

The flasher self-cancelling feature has not worked since I have bought the bike. The speedo and tach were dead so I had to get those working first. Now that the speedo and tach are working I am looking at the self-canceling circuit.

I have to locate the self canceler. The manual makes it appear that it is located under the fuel tank. Is that correct?

Yes the speedo produces a quiet tink tink tink when spinning. I used a Q tip stripped of cotton to spin it on the workbench. Mounted on the bike, the speedo works great. Rode 40 miles yesterday. The tach, speedo, odometer and trip odometer all work correctly.

The self canceling unit is under the tank. Testing requires the engine to be dining and the bike to be in motion after the signals have been turned on.

The self-canceler is plugged in. The connectors are fairly dirty. If there was good contact when it was built, there show be contact now.

The self-canceller appears to potted. Figuring it out and fixing it appears to be a no go. Is this self-canceler identical to the XJ650? The self canceler on the XJ650 was working when I parked it 3 years ago.

As an aside, on the XJ1100, there is room under the tank for your hand to remove the self-canceler from its bracket. I did unbolt the tank and lift it some with a scrap piece of wood. I could not lift and set the tank nearby as you can with a XJ650. The XJ1100 has two petcocks and two fuel lines. The tank is where it is until you actually disconnect at least one fuel line.

Pull all of the plugs and deoxidize the terminals. Corrosion does not fear a plugged in connector.

AFIK all of the self-canceler units are identical.

Thank K-Moe. I will break out the tube of Deoxit and clean the contacts when I have the tank off for the valve clearance measurement.

That will be very awesome if I can swap the canceler from the sidelined XJ650.

Today the signal flashers quit completely. The hazard flasher work fine and all of the bulbs are operational. I pulled the flasher relay and it is a 2-pin JIN-YI FL249SD. According to Len's catalog page on relays the part should be a Nippondenso FU257CD 3-pin device. Any confirmation of the part number will be appreciated.

It looks the PO swapped in a brand X flasher to get it working.

This will be another thing to pull from the XJ650 when I remove its tank.

That would explain the self-canceling not working. The Nippondenso part is correct, but you'll find that only used units are available (unless someone has a stash of NOS units). There is a workaround involving two commonly available relays. Info in this thread: http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/posts/114964/
