Well I'm a proud owner although I can't really tell what model she is just yet... Seca XJ550 I think, don't know what year. Price was right though... free!

Hasn't run in several years and there's lots that needs tending to. Reckon I might be posting here for a bit... Hopefully I'll hear soon from the XJCD guy. What about the Yamaha manuals, worth buying? (I'll need to find out the model year for this.)

    thanks,
    iq.

Nice score! Welcome to the gang. It looks like a 81 or so 550 Seca. Post the first 7 digits of the VIN and we can get you the definitive answer.
As for the factory manual, you will never make a better investment in any machine you own. Worth every penny (and there are a few, quite a few).

    I'm pretty sure that's an '82 Seca 550.

The 81's were white with red stripes, then Yamaha reversed the colors for '82. Every '83 Seca 550 I've seen is black with red stripes.

The info on the XJCD and a Clymer's manual should have most of what you need.

According to the chart on the XJCD and based on the first seven of your VIN, it's an '81 or '82. If the eighth number is 0 it's an '81. If it's a 2 then it's an '82.

Hmmmm well I suppose you didn't pay too much for that bike. Looks like a good specimen. Clean and tune it up, looks too nice to go to waste!

the tenth digit of the serial number is your year. It is deffinatly an XJ550 and my guess is it is re-painted (ones ide is a diferent color than the other?) so you can't go by that.

    Spokes -

I don't thing the tenth digit is the year on the XJ550. On my '81 Seca 550 the tenth digit is a "B".

According to the Model ID chart on the XJCD, the eighth digit determines the year on these bikes.

However, the tenth digit is the year on my V Star.

zat your beemer in the background? Curious how you guys with multiple bikes (of different periods) find going from one to the other? I wonder when I get my new beemer if my xj will see much use.

    ....Just pondering...

Then it's a 198B, same year i was born. LOL. It must be the 8th digit on these bike then. (most other bikes are the tenth)

Here's the serial number info from the XJCD.....

If the serial number is within 4U8-020101 to 4U8-100000 then it's a 1982 model

If the serial number is within 4U8-000101 to 4U8-020000 then it's a 1981 model
