:?: I recently bought a XJ550 Maxim. I would like to know if I can buy oil for it at Wal-Mart, or do I have to go to a bike shop. This is my first bike, and I know nothing about them. I am also looking for a 1982 XJ550 Maxim manual. Thank You.

Wal-Mart should be fine if they sell motorcycle oil or oil that is not energy conserving. They should have some kind of motorcycle oil at that place.

Check out Denis kirk.com for oil and other bike supplies as well. And while your at it fill out the order forum for there free catalog for Metric Bikes. It's around 700 pages and in color with looks of pictures of parts and supplies.

    Also check out this post.

Oh yeah the type of oil you want to get for your bike SAE 20W/40 Motorcycle oil. Check out Bel Ray motorcycle oil at Dennis Kirk if price is an issue. Now how to check the oil level all you have to do is add oil. Keep adding till the little see through glass thing that is near the right hand side foot peg and rear brake pedal is filled to almost the top.

Castrol dealer for the US will ship to your door for a very reasonable price too. Go to the Castrol website and navigate to the located dealer page. There are dealers throughout the states but there is one who will help anyone, anywhere. Good luck!

Don't forget to have the bike level when you check the oil level. I find the best way is to have it in my garage on the center stand.
