85 xj700x project

    Picked up a few months back
    New bars
    lowered rear
    plan on trimming down the seat and re upholstering myself
    Turn signals will be taken off and smaller ones to come
    Tach is busted so I'm either replacing with stock or going to a single all digital

    Anyone with rear fender ideas I need some help I want to keep this a two seater so cutting off the rear of the frame is not likely but the original is square and the rear tail light is hideous IMAG0482.jpg IMAG0707.jpg IMAG0711.jpg IMAG0708.jpg

    I got some help from strat on the rear shocks my last bike was a Suzuki ls650 after reading he used the savage shocks I found a set on eBay used for $35.00 I believe 10.5 inches 2 shorter than stock fit real nice

    Did you use the stock seat pan and cut it down? I'd really like to do something similar to the seat on my 85 XJ700X.

    Big lights make you visible. Being visible helps prevent the leading cause of hospital trips; "But officer, I didn't see him."

    There are other options, but surface area is just as important as brightness, so don't go too small.

    yes original cut it with dremel spray adhesive memory foam some staples and an old leatheer jacket

    Here's my seat. My first time and it shows. I am happy with the size and shape, but I bought inexpensive material as I expected to mess up. And I didn't realize the staples would be noticable until after the pic.

    Nice just leave the material longer place your staples as far under the seat then trim make sure to pull tight the whole time

    Finished the seats the gauges need a little cleaning up so I took them off to paint I like the look without them anyone know how to get this thing started without the gauges connected

    You can't. That's where the fuses are. When you took the gauges off you also disconnected most of the electrical circuits.

    Gauges are good. Gauges keep the bike legal. Gauges keep the po-po from handing you yellow papers.

    I understand there are fuses those fuses also can be by passed or 're routed with individual fuseable links without the entire bezel to all fit hidden in the headlight my gauges are busted from previous owner they don't work either way only reason leaving them on right now is to start the bike I'm replacing it with aftermarket eventually but in the mean time I would like to go without also the neutral light fuel light and oil light can be left on in this application as far as the fuzz each state has different requirement

    If you really want to you can wire in a fusebox that is small enough to mount in the headlight. Just trace the wires to see which fuse goes to which pair of wires.

    Thank you I ended up just soldering fuses in with out the bezel so the entire wire harness with all lights and connectors stays in tact inside the headlight for now so when I'm able to find and can afford a stock replacement it's still bolt on ready
