There are crazier things to do to a motorcycle ...

Right now, I'm at a loss to think of one.

Are you going to letter the side of your fuel tank with: "Don't Need Key To Start"

Oh, and don't forget to notify your Insurance Company.

(And in another Thread ~> Right Now ~> There are guys who can hardly pay the Annual Premium)

There must be a word for that kind of Mod.

    OK ...

    Let's VOTE!

My Vote is: RIDICULOUS IDEA !!!

If the Ignition Switch is BAD.
    Replace it.
    If you lost your key.
    Get a new one.

If this was a good idea ...
    They'd come that way!!!

thanks for the help with the wiring answer, for all the others the bike will never see the street so the key is something I though about getting rid of because as I age its harder to find things. And did someone say radio shack sells key switches?

I gotta go with Rick on this one. My ignition cylinder got broken off when some asshole knocked my bike over. I had to bypass the switch with a toggle until I can find a new one, and it scares the living crap out of me to leave it parked anywhere. I even pull the main fuse because at least that's locked under the seat. AND I LIVE IN A 'GOOD' NEIGHBORHOOD! Trust no one.

What you are doing is stupid. Not only that, but if you decide to sell the bike, then the next owner is going to have to put it back on anyway. If you are having so much trouble finding the key, why don't you just leave it in the bike with a big red ribbon on it? That's what you'd be doing anyway by putting in a switch. Why don't you do the same thing with your car and house keys too since you'll have problems finding those.. And what was your address again?

I't will be just as much fun when you turn the Key to On and push the Start Button to get it running.

It's NOT the business of this forum to offer instructions how to defeat the Ignition System.

You are invited to ask if anyone is willing to assist you in the Modification you care to make, if you desire. But, use the PM Function. Let the information pass to you in a NON-Public manner.

I hope you understand that the security of the Bikes for the OTHER -- One Thousand Nine Hundred Eighty Four Members is at stake.

Stick around. There's a Mountain of information and useful advise for you to use getting that machine running in Tip-Top shape.

The song you wanted us to play ain't supposed to be played in Public.
What you do privately ... is none of our business; anyway!

    Don't be angry.
It's all part of trying to run a tight ship.

Dear readers, I must defer to good judgement when I am faced with it. In my rush to assist another, I did err and post some very sensitive information that I have subsequently removed. I hope you can understand why and forgive me for any upset I may have caused in my haste.
    To Seagate:
In no way do the folks here want to create an unwelcoming environment for you. The issue at hand is simply this, the efforts you are making on your bike are your business, no one will argue that. However, the experience of others here has shown that it is not a wise idea this day in age (witness the rising crime rates). If you care to continue, please do so with great caution. The uproar that ensued from my posting was appropriate, I literally handed out information to any thief/ner'do-well on how to hot wire an XJ. It is for this reason that I chose to edit my post and hope that you can understand why folks got their feathers ruffled.
Looking forward to seeing your efforts bear fruit, post some pictures if you can.

    Mr. Seagrave:

That idea is worse than just having a toggle switch. Motorcycles are inherently dangerous. Having an automotive ignition switch, capable of causing the starter motor to operate without your hand on the handlebar ...

That's playing with a loaded gun.

    Some ideas are good ideas.
Some ideas are not so good.
Some ideas are bad, even if the idea seems like a good idea.

Fix the OEM Ignition right and just leave the key in the Ignition.

That ought to do the trick!

As long as he puts the key on the RIGHT side, not the left, and leaves the factory starter interlock system in place (won't start in gear unless the clutch is pulled, and won't start if the sidestand is down unless it's in neutral, regardless of clutch), it becomes a 'not so good' idea instead of a really bad idea. I still wouldn't do it anyway, but at least if he's insistent on setting it up that way there's at least some peace of mind that he's not going to wind up getting thrown off an out of control bike because he started it in gear.
