I'm having a hard time locking down a replacement set of screws for a 1983 Maxim 750. I am getting a bike on the road for a coworker and his floatbowl and top cap screws are well stripped. If you could point me in a good direction or simply a list of sizes, that would be a huge help.

    Regards,

    Peter

Check out the catalogue at XJ4ever. It's the link at top right of every page here. Or start a conversation with Chacal. He's the XJ4ever guy. Very knowledgeable, helpful, nice guy! If he can't help you, throw out the bike, 'cuz no one can!

As blasphemous as it sounds, there are complete sets on fleabay for carbs racks.
When I rebuilt my rack I got mine there.

It doesn't mean I don't love Len and is in no way a slight against the customer service provided by XJ4Ever. :D

Ace hardware stores typically carry a wide selection of Hillman fasteners. Usually rather pricey, but convenient, and you can look through a variety of metric stainless hardware to find what you like. IIRC, when I recently rebuilt my Virago's Mikunis, the replacement OE-style screws that came with the K&L kits were stainless for the bowls but regular steel for the caps.

If you go with OE screws (which are actually JIS, not Phillips) you should also get a JIS #2 driver to keep them from getting chewed up again. Chacal sells these as well.

That sounds about perfect for me, but I couldn't find any. Do you have a link or search string I could try?

Really appreciate how responsive the member on this forum are. I tend to use these forums as a secondary resource for bikes I'm working on and this one is really good. This is the type of thing I was looking for. Do you think this will work for these hitachi carbs on an 83 maxim 750?

It looks appropriate; 16 smaller ones for the carb hats and 8 each for the top and bottom of the rack support bars. Hmmm, but it doesn't have carb bowl screws . . . . Or the 16 remaining are carb bowl screws and it doesn't have the rack screws.
If you are replacing your carb drain screws you can get them fromXJ4Ever (my preferred vendor bar none for Yamaha parts) or try this source (every reason to believe his quality is top notch):

I am being subtle but truth be told I am not 100% sure that the link is going to provide you with the correct hardware.
With this all said, your absolute best source is XJ4Ever, you may pay a little more but the piece of mind that comes with ordering through Chacal/ Len is priceless, you tell him what bike you have and what parts you need and he will make sure you get the right stuff ordered, often times he sends little 'How To's' with what you are ordering, his delivery time is listed as 'normal' however I have always received items within two days of ordering (normal delivery in the continental U.S. is 3-5 days).

This web site is the internets best kept secret, I learned massive amounts here through the generosity of others and am just paying it forward.

Thanks for this, I think I'm going to fire an email to the guy who runs the xj4ever site. At least then I'll know what i'm getting is good. Ebay is such a crapshoot sometimes.

pull one of each type of screw and take them to a local hardware store (don't waste your time with Lowe's/HD, they don't do the home mechanic thing) and get a set of stainless allen screws. Looks better works better, just takes a bit more money and effort on your part to hunt everything down. Worth it though.

I Take it you mean the head of the screw is stripped out. Was gonna say the aluminum will strip before the screw will. I usually replace them with allen heads. Pull one of each out i have bought mine at hardware store if don't have the time to wait for a kit from len
