Is there a way to fit a screw in gas cap to the original xj550 tank in a way that doesn't involve welding.

I've looked at a lot of the AM screw in or popup ones and maybe I'm being dumb but I don't understand if the hole in all tanks is universal size and if these things will screw into the original hole or does it mean the plug only screws into the outer part which needs welding to the tank?

No. Your tank does not have a threaded tank opening. Any thing other than a factory style cap will require modification to the tank. You could whittle yourself a big cork though.

I very nearly made an aftermarket pop-up cap donated from a sportster work. It might be possible with a little more patience and maybe an extra cap to make mistakes on.
I would advise you to just order the right gas cap unless you really want to weld on a gas tank. I've been going the dangerous/stupid/experimental route and trying to make plumbing fittings work
.... but I'm no role model. I'm just a dangerous nincompoop.

Dangerous nincompoops are required for progress. Keep on!

You know.. This is an old thread and everything but... I may actually do this cork idea. Unless there is good reason not to, I think it'd be pretty fitting for my ratish bike.

use an expantion plug ( freeze plug in cars) i use one to paint the tank change the nut and bolt to a lever like on a boat plug you will need a vent
    that would be the problem

you would probally want to shave the diameter down a little drill press and sand paper

i saw the china ones on ebay or amazon for 16 bucks

you could always solder one of these on from a buick and use the cap that comes with it or the neck from an old raidaitor and cap

The cork refrence was a joke. anything that can pop loose is bad. Think about where any fuel that escapes from the tank will go (look down right now). You do not want gas to go there.

yup but i can see it on a rat bike just to get the look, if he gets a big enough cork he can hollow it out and make a cap cover. with a bandanna tied around it.................

I knew it was a joke, but I think it'd be pretty cool. This bike isn't a show bike and it's anything but stock. So, the more weird shit on it while being ridiculously stripped down the better. I may play with the idea and figure something out.
