Since I pulled the mufflers off of my xj650 and put the tips on it idles ruff then will cut off at low rpm( under 1000). Is this a air fuel issue? It sounds like some popping in the left side exhaust. I'm going to make baffles for it soon to help with back pressure a little bit and to make it a little quieter.

is it set to idle at 1k? should be about 1200 rpm check the inside of your sidecovers it will be listed there.
could be an air fuel issue with no back pressure , you will have to blue tune and do plug chops to see if you are running rich or lean. change up the jets in the carbs if you are

I wasn't sure what they were suppose to idle at. I just hear a pop in the right side exhaust. I'm going to make a set of baffles to quiet it down a little bit and may put in a lollipop baffle to give it some back pressure

I couldn't download the link. Do you know how many turns it takes to set the air fuel screw?

Mixture screws are set at 2.5 turns out from a soft-seat. Then fine-tuned from there.

I'm running straight pipes right now so I may have to go up a jet size. What size do I need to go to. I'm not running pods just straight pipe.

The original mufflers are so free-blowing that if you are still using stock setup, just putting long noisy obnoxious sounding pipes on rather than the mufflers, you probably don't need to change jets

Mine has 21" long exhaust chrome tips but they are just open. They don't have any muffler to them. I was wondering if I would have to change jets or not.

Asked and answered. See Hogfiddles'post above yours.

If you want to you can add temporary backpressure by stuffing coffee cans full of steel wool and wiring them over the ends of your pipes (imagine them being like a very loose fittting cap). That will give you a temporary muffler-like device.

The only lolipop trick I know about involved a girl I used to date.

Very popular with the suzuki vl1500 crowd. That being said, I don't have the lollipops on my vl1500..... I have the Cobra straightshot exhaust, G-Man stage-3 carb re-structuring and jetting, K&N open air-filter, swirled baffles in the ends of the exhaust pipes.

    Is it loud? Yup

Is it obnoxiously, annoyingly loud? Yup

Do I completely contradict myself in saying that I have such a loud bike when I so staunchly am against loud bikes? Yup.

It's for the times I want sheer brute power, for the days when I'm in a 'bad'
mood, or the group rides where there are so many Harley-type bikes, that I just want to be loud too, rather than rev the mosquito-like engine. Though, most of the time I relish riding the 700 on those rides.

    Dichotomy, complexity, yup----

I like that one k-moe! I seen something called a lollipop baffle awhile back. It involved an eye bolt and a big washer if u remember correctly. I think you turned the washer position and it tuned the exhaust sound.

Yep, on the suzuki, the G-man company even calls them "G-pops"... And yep, that's basically what they look like

James, maybe you want to start your own thread so we can see what's up.

    Could be:
    - tight valves
    - clogged/dirty carbs
    - tci breakdown
    -gas cap vent issue
    -vacuum tube/fuel tube collapse
    -electrical issue
    -etc....

So start a topic and let the the xj-collective brain get working on it----

My first thought is probably carb-related......
