I assume the grease that came with the kit is for the O-ring seal, but i see some also use it on the whole piston, is that correct? Will that not mix with the brake fluid?

The grease is for the sliding bush on the caliper. The piston seals should be lubricated with brake fluid prior to inserting the piston into the bore.

It's the part under the small bellows just below the piston bore in this pic.

Looks a little extreme and not a bike caliper, but i have seen several web pages that show this:

The brake grease is okay to use on the seals (and the piston), but those two pictures are overkill by far. And certainly do use it on any sliding parts like k-moe indicates.

Excellent, thanks for the input, actually been waiting for a reply from XJ4EVER. Everything I've read shows to use it on the seals, including the package, I figured, and have read, a very small amount might be OK on the piston also.

Applied a small amount of grease to the inner seal and a small film on the piston, only near the top before inserting. New piston, seals on:

Both together and ready to install, plenty of grease on the slide bolt:

Looking good. I just started the front calipers on a 1978 XS750, and the first one I tackled today the piston was frozen in the caliper. Tried air... no go. Tried the grease gun on the bleed fitting, and that worked *awesome*! Now I just have to clean all of the grease off!

Yea, one of mine was stuck also. It looked pretty bad, So I clamped vise grips at the top and took a large screw driver and hammer, and beat it out. Seemed to work OK, without all the grease, but I was replacing that piston, so I didn't care if I damaged it.

    Good luck with the rebuild.

You got lucky that the piston didn't get cockeyed and damage the bore.
