I ran into something different when I went to connect the new hose to the master cylinder. First it was not near as tight as the other hose connections. It also used a sealing washer/spacer, thicker than a crush washer with plastic inserts. I actually had to reuse these special spacers, because with the crush washers the bolt seemed to bottom out and not tighten all the way.
    Anyone run into this?

This is on an XJ650RJ bike

Haynes shows all the union bolts are the same as well as all the sealing washers.
    is it a oem MC?

Yea, I looked several places and it shows the same washers for all union bolts. I'm not sure it it is OEM, it appears to be.

Does the master cylinder have Yamaha cast into the cover?
Throw up a pic if you can. There should not be a plastic anything on the lines. The stock configuration is a pair of copper crush washers.

Post a pic of the brake line end as well. Who was the supplier?

here you can see the thicker than normal washers:

here is the master cylinder box.

The hoses came from xj4ever, they seem fine, as long as I use the original washers. I see no Yamaha on the master cylinder anywhere. So maybe it is an aftermarket.

The bolt could be too long (for that m/c), you can always double-up on the crush washers (one or both sides) to allow the bolt to be torqued to its proper value of 19 foot-pounds of torque (max).

I don't think that's the right color for the bolt.... Maybe that's the wrong part----

Seems to be the same as all the others, should the MC bolt be different?
They all seem to clean up really well, seems like they are all stainless.

the washers look like brass, not copper, they should be the color of a penny.

The right stuff ? And what would that be, these are plastic lined washers, thicker than a standard copper washer used on the banjo bolts. The standard washers won't work unless I use more then one on each side. Not sure that would be better than what I have. These are the original spacers, apparently that came with this, possibly aftermarket MC. So what would the right replacement be?

    The correct replacement would be:

    -correct master cylinder
    - correct washers
    -Correct bolt
You said you got the hose from Len, so assuming you ordered the correct hose you should at least be good there...

As long as it dosen't leak, and passes fluid, you're golden (assuming that the master cylinder has the correct bore size).

This must be an aftermarket MC, it all worked fine before replacing the hose, so I assume it was the correct bolt and washers for that setup. I guess we'll see when it all gets tested after everything is back together.

I see a sight window on the bolt side . I do not think it is an oem part.

    Bolt, Union 90401-10034-00 or 90401-10159-00
I measured a few from a 550 which is supposed to be the same part. 20.76 mm 20.88 mm 21 mm 21 mm.
the shorter ones were a tinted finish and the long ones were silver color
if the mc and washers are working for you that is fine. it will be when you rebuild it you will have to find correct parts for an unknown brand.

Right ...good point. Probably an OEM rebuild kit won't work on this one. I'll have to do some research and see if I can find the original source.

that looks like it . you could send them a message through the add and ask about rebuild kit availability. fo 33 $ you could just buy the whole set up.
full rebuild kits run 24 to 39 $
