Just opened the air box on the 85 XJ700N and found I have a K & N air filter. Just how do you clean/recharge one of these things?

They make a kit with cleaner and oil. You can clean it out with soap and water, I use Dawn since it cuts grease so well and then dry it out overnight. Then reoil once dry with the K&N oil and reinstall.

The PO of my bike used gasoline and compressed air to clean it, let it dry outside overnight and oiled it with engine oil the following day. Says he did this with many bikes over the years without problems.

I'm not saying it's the way to go, just pointing out another option...

Thanks you guys. I'll take care of cleaning it tonight and give it overnight to dry before oiling it up.

Blow out any filter with compressed air and you might as well not bother putting it back into the vechicle, It's not doing you any good anyways

K&N written instructions insist that you use only their special filter cleaner and oil to clean and re-oil their filters. A filter "recharge" kit from K&N isn't very expensive and is available in stores and online. I use these products because of their million mile warranty but it is null and void if you use any other products to service the filter. I've gotten excellent service out of the recharge kit and am pleased with the results. That said, I'm sure that there probably exists other cleaning agents out there that would work (Castrol SuperClean and S-100 come to mind) but for the money and piece of mind (gee, why did my filter element disintegrate?), I'll stick with the manufacturer's recommendations.
