Hi everyone.. Ilovethex here.,I have a 1986xj700x bought the bike before Christmas for almost nothing.44k on the old girl and took me 3straight days before it would run correctly.. Unfortunately (don't know why I didn't notice this in Pryor cleaning) but the idle mixture screw on carb three is stripped... Noticed this when I was checking idle mixture factory settings. So I set the other three carbs and left that one alone. P.O. said that the bike ran great.Should I be concerned?? How do I get that screw out? Also, is there a overflow on the radiator?Reservoir is full and radiator is also and fan is not coming on...At what tempeture is the fan supposed to come on???Could the thermostat be bad?Bike was at a still idle so no air was cooling the radiator....Any help would be great!!! Thanks, ILOVETHEX

    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/the-ultimate-relay-switch-sensor-and-diodes-guide.27543/

above link has how to test your sensors, info is about 4 pages down.

maybe the threads can be reformed with a tap ( its a special tap
maybe a new carb body would be something you may consider buying.
unless you are lucky and the mixture screw is where it needs to be it will cause issues.
tool costs may make it better to get a carb body

do you have a temp guage ? check the heat difference of the exhaust headers, that will give you an idea of where your carb settings are at .
my 550 runs great on three cylinders even better on four.

Thanks for your response. Do you know at what tempeture the fan is supposed to kick on? Was almost into the red.The bike did set for a year ,is it possible the thermostat is bad?

With the factory thermoswitch the fan does not come on until the thermometer needle almost gets into the red.

I think you need to invest in a service manual. Think of forums as being the best supplement ever, but the manual is a basic necessity.
