Hey guys, new here. But I need some advice. I recently cleaned the carbs on it and made sure everything worked and now I can't get it to start. It will only run on starting fluid for a few seconds. I have tryed everything and can't figure it out. Please help, I cannot afford another garage bill. This is my daily bike and love it. Awesome bike.

How did you clean the carbs? Did you sync the carbs after?

If it fires off starting fluid and shuts off then gas ain't making it to the engine open the drain screw on one of the float bowls if gas drains out clean the carburetor if it doesn't say a thankful prayer and check the petcock.

    Did you go to church?
    In the Church of Clean.

More importantly at this stage; did you set the petcock to PRI so the float bowls could fill? Is there enough fuel in the tank?

Fuel does not get into engine. Once float drains are opened it leaks fuel. So I am a bit confused. Never had it happen before.

Yes I have tryed petcock on all settings. Very frustrating. I have had the carbs off the bike a dozen times and cleaned it every time just to make sure. These xj are tough. Need it running again asap. I'm sure you bikers know how it feels to have many bikes and none are running. It's been down for 2 months. Ugh. I really appreciate all the help guys. Thank you

When you had the carbs off how far did you strip them down? What was your cleaning technique? Did you dip the carb bodies without tearing them all the way down?
Did you replace any parts? Did you check the float levels (if so, did you check wet or dry)?

so when you say cleand the carbs you removed all the fuel and air jets that are removable the enrichment plungers and the mixture screws as well as the needle valves and bodies? diphrams and slides

then do you varifiy that fuel flows through the passages when you have the carbs apart?

you spray cleaner into the main air jet and it comes out of the carb body where the main fuel jet and asperator tube have been removed?
for the enrichment circuit up the bowl tube and it flows out the plunger and into the carb throat?

spray up the pilot jet and it flows out the pilot air jet and mixture screw (screw removed) port and into the carb throat?

look at this link for referance

The enrichment circuit (choke) should do the same thing starting fluid does if the circuit is clean and properly operating. Are the mix screws set at 2.5 turns out? If so, open them another 1/8".
